CPAP Equipment Care

If you have a CPAP device or have been told you need one, you will have to clean the equipment that comes with it.

Instructions

1. Comfort Gel Mask
Comfort Gel masks require you to boil them in water and to quickly cool slightly so that you can fit them to your specific needs. These masks may soften if you use a heated humidifier.

Daily fill a basin with warm not hot soapy water.

If you have a comfort gel mask you will want to make sure that the water is not very hot or you could remove your custom seal.

2. CPAP Mask with straps attached
There are several styles to choose from so if the one you have is uncomfortable you do have the option to have a different design.

Remove the head strap from your CPAP mask.

This can usually be done by unclipping the forehead cushion from the rest of the mask. Some masks require you to unclip or use the Velcro to remove the headgear from the mask.

Place the mask into the warm soapy water.

3. CPAP Humidifier
There are several different kinds of humidifiers. If you have a problem with the air being too dry with your CPAP device ask for a heated humidifier!

Remove your humidifier if you have one from the humidifier base.

If it is a heated humidifier you will want to shut it off at this time.

Empty any contents of the humidifier in the sink and then place it into the warm soapy water.

4. CPAP Filters
Foam filter for removing dust particles that could make you sick with the forced air that a CPAP device delivers. The less gunk entering your lungs the better!

There should be 2 filters in the back of your CPAP OR BIPAP device. One is a paper type disposable filter and the other one is a sponge filter.

The disposable filter should be thrown out and replaced in accordance with your insurance and device provider of "vendor". The foam filter should be washed

out and dried at least twice a week and some doctors prefer 3 times a week.

Apply a drop of dish soap to your foam filter and dip it into your basin of warm soapy water. Squish it several times in your hand making sure to force out any patches of dust and dirt.

Rinse well in clear water and pat dry. Leave on clean washcloth or paper towels until dry then place both the sponge filter and your paper pre-filter back into the filter compartment on your CPAP device.

5. CPAP Machine
Wipe the machine and it's base down daily to help remove dust that could be sucked into the machine and filter.

Allow your CPAP supplies to soak for about 15 -20 minutes then swish with the soapy water, rinse well and place on paper towels or a clean washcloth or face towel to dry.

Once everything is dry you can reconnect your face mask to your headgear. Fill your humidifier with Distilled water and return to your humidifier base. If it is heated you may turn it on now but if you can remember it is better to turn it on at the same time you turn on your CPAP device.

Place your filters back into the rear of your unit. Wipe down CPAP machine and it's base. You are now ready to use your device when you go to bed. It is also suggested you use your CPAP or BIPAP device if you take a nap.

6. Good Sleep with CPAP
With clean equipment you can have a safe, restful and finally a good night's sleep

Weekly Care

This should be done at least twice a week and more often if possible. This is in addition to doing the steps above. Remove all hoses from the CPAP or BIPAP device and place into your warm soapy water and wash as described above.

Hang tubing over shower curtain rod to dry. Wash both the long and short tubing and rinse well. Wash your headgear in the warm soapy water, simply squish the headgear together several times in the soapy water and also use your fingers or a clean sponge to wipe down the forehead cushion, rinse in clear water and place on towel to dry. As always wipe down the CPAP or BIPAP device, surrounding area and humidifier base.
