Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis Treatment

Therapy

People with cystic fibrosis need a way to physically remove thick mucus from their lungs. This is often done by manually clapping with cupped hands on the front and back of the chest — a procedure that's best performed with the person's head over the edge of the bed so that gravity helps clear the secretions.

Chest physiotherapy

This can be done at home using a hand-held percussor that can mimic the effect of cupped hands clapping over the ribs.

Recommended Chest Percussion Therapy Positions & Spots

Upper Lobes - Position 1
Patient leans back on pillow at 30º angle. Percussion is applied to the area between clavicle and top of scapula on each side.

Upper Lobes - Position 2
Patient leans over pillow at 30º angle. Percussion is applied to upper back on both sides.

Upper Lobes - Position 3
Patient lies on back with pillow under knees. Percussion is applied to area between clavicle and nipple on both sides.

Lower Lobes - Position 1
Patient lies on abdomen, then rotates ¼ turn upward. Percussion is applied over uppermost portion of lower ribs on each side.

Lower Lobes - Position 2
Patient lies down on abdomen. Percussion is applied over lower ribs close to spine on each side.

Lower Lobes - Position 3
Patient lies on abdomen. Percussion is applied over middle of back at tip of scapula on either side of spine.

Left Upper Lobe
Patient lies on right side and rotates ¼ turn backward. Percussion therapy is applied over left nipple area.

Right Middle Lobe
Patient lies on left side and rotates ¼ turn backwards. Percussion is applied over right nipple area.

Breathing devices

Performing specific breathing exercises while exhaling through the device's tube or a mask may also be helpful.

AcapellaAcapella combines the benefits of both PEP therapy and airway vibrations to mobilize pulmonary secretions and can be used in virtually any spatial orientation. Patients are free to sit, stand or recline.
It improves clearance of secretions, is easier to tolerate than CPT, takes less than half the time of conventional CPT sessions* and facilitates opening of airways in patients with lung diseases with secretory problems (COPD, asthma, Cystic Fibrosis). Color-coded units (green for high-flow, blue for low) help customize treatment based on clinical needs. You can adjust acapella's frequency and flow resistance simply by turning an adjustment dial.

Medications

Antibiotics. These drugs are used to treat and prevent lung infections. They may be swallowed in pill form, inhaled in a mist or delivered intravenously.

Mucus-thinning drugs. Drugs that reduce the stickiness of your mucus make it easier to cough up the mucus, which improves lung function.

Bronchodilators. Medications such as albuterol — delivered by an inhaler or a nebulizer - help keep your airways open by relaxing the muscles around your bronchial tubes.
